It seems like everyone I know is into weight loss. Our weight as Americans has soared in the last two decades. Obesity is now a full blown epidemic. There are many factors involved in this problem. The first and most important is our lifestyle. Many of us work a 9-5 job sitting at a desk. We are sedentary for most of the day. When we arrive home, we are too tired to start making food so we go out and get it or we just pick up something convenient on the way home. I don’t know about you, but in my neighborhood we have pizzerias, fast food burger and chicken restaurants and delis. That pretty much dooms any weight loss we might be contemplating. Why? Well, let’s look at a few facts.
Fast foods typically have many things in common. First of all, they are loaded with fat. Most of this fat is saturated fat, a double whammy. This fat is loaded with calories. The body must rid itself of the excess fat so it stores it. That’s not going to help our weight loss, now will it? Second, fast foods are loaded with salt. Lots of salt. I see the local teens working at the local burger joint wave that salt shaker all over the fries until it looks like they are covered with snow. Wow, yummy! Salt, another killer, causes our bodies to bloat. Yes, we get very bloated from excess salt consumption. As a side benefit, it contributes to heart disease, another raging epidemic in our country. Sugar, ahh sweet sugar! Yes, let’s not forget sugar. What does the body do with excess sugar in the blood? Well, insulin is dumped into our bloodstream so we don’t have a stroke. What does insulin do? It converts the sugar into… drum roll please… FAT! We certainly are not going to get any help with weight loss from our friend sugar. You may be saying that I am full of it because you drink diet soda, so there! Diet soda is so bad for you for so many reasons. If you drink diet sodas, please do yourself a big favor and stop drinking them right now.
How about exercise? For most people, the only exercise they get is running down the street to catch the bus. Seriously, we don’t exercise enough as a whole. My local gym has a special on one year memberships that are paid all at once. You know why those are so cheap? I’ll give you one guess. You got it! These memberships are incredibly profitable because maybe 3 out of 100 of those signups actually go there past the first month. Yes, come January 2nd, the gym is full of New Year’s Resolutionists as I like to call them. They drop off in droves until the regulars reclaim the gym about three weeks later.
At this point, you may be thinking that your weight loss dreams may never come true. Well, we have good news. Our website is chock full of advice on dieting topics. The one thing that all of us need to achieve our weight loss goals is determination. We must never give up. Most of us give up just as we are about to succeed. Don’t let that happen to you. Good luck!
Believe it or not, drinking lots of water helps your diet efforts more than you think. Did you know that the body makes you feel hunger even when you are just thirsty? Yes, it is true. Drinking eight 8oz. glasses of water each and every day will keep your body hydrated and you diet humming along. Remember, the body also needs water to flush out that fat that we are trying to lose!
Walking is the miracle exercise. Walking about a half an hour a day will help your diet tremendously. It does not matter what diet you are on. The reason we like walking is because anyone can do it and walking is not overly stressful on the body. Running and jogging when you are very overweight can be downright dangerous!
Get a good night's sleep. Yes, you heard me right, lack of sleep will kill any diet. Lack of sleep does many bad things, but when dieting, it affects your metabolism and also contributes to eroding your energy level and enthusiasm. So go get a good night's sleep, your body will thank you for it.
